DescriptionVintage print. Image of parked car in front of brightly projected image of pegasus.Gallery LabelThe illuminated logo of Mobil gas, featuring the winged horse Pegasus, glows eerily through a wintry haze along the New York Thruway. Taken a year before the 1973 oil crisis, which forced Americans to reckon with their dependence upon foreign oil, the photograph, in hindsight, conveys a sense of foreboding.
This image derives from the series Autolandscapes, a body of work produced by Elaine Mayes in 1971 when she drove across the United States with her husband (and four cats) photographing the landscape.
