DescriptionOne in a series of four images showing one woman consoling another woman. In this image a woman is wearing hat and coat standing on the sidwalk holding the hands of another woman who is wearing a dress, standing on the street, and looking up at her while smiling. There is an overpass behind them and a puddle of water near the curb.Exhibition HistoryRotation 26. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, March 29, 2019- August 25, 2019, no cat.
Working with a small 35mm camera, Helen Levitt depicted people in New York with grace and warmth. This unusual set of four variant images reveals her candid, unstaged working method and her attentiveness to the full interaction unfolding before her. This interest in time is telling: in addition to her still photography, Levitt worked with a motion picture camera in the 1940s and 1950s.
