DescriptionImage of men wearing uniformed jumpsuits pushing an airplane.Gallery Label
Wayne Miller took this photograph at a low angle and in close proximity to men straining to push an airplane on the deck of an aircraft carrier. His composition emphasizes the physical and emotional experience of his fellow naval officers engaged in the Pacific during World War II. Miller was assigned to the Naval Aviation Unit under photographer Edward Steichen. He recorded the daily events of the war through the eyes of the men who served, at times risking his own life to get a photograph.
