DescriptionImage of bearded male nude standing in profile while holding a stick above his head and looking down.Gallery LabelGaudenzio Marconi made a living making nude photographic studies for students at Paris’s prestigious School of Fine Arts. Photographs like this one served as affordable and highly portable alternatives to live models. Here, Marconi posed the model in a heroic, active stance similar to those found in history paintings (paintings with classical, biblical, and historical subject matter).
Though marketed as reference images for artists and craftspeople, Marconi’s nudes sometimes clashed with strict French decency laws, and in 1873 the government condemned him for publishing obscene images, causing him to leave France.
