DescriptionA circular metal choker entirely decorated with wound steel wire. The front has two strands of fine industrial chain link of equal length. The simplicity yet elegant design of this neck ornament suggests links with one of East Africa’s nomadic groups, such as the Samburu or Maasai who treasure jewelry because of the ease of carrying them on their migrations.Provenance

Quaker missionaries, ca. 1900 [1];

Unknown university collection;

Gaylord Torrence, Kansas City, MO, by 2013;

His gift to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 2013.

NOTES:

[1] According to Gaylord Torrence, the necklace was acquired by Quaker missionaries before 1900 and was later in a small university collection. The identity of this collection is currently unknown.
