NOTES:

[1] According to a description on the Hampton Gallery sales slip, dated February 15, 1995, this object was “collected” in 1947. A handwritten note from Gilbert Hampton to Donald Tranin, dated April 10, 1995, indicates the object was “purchased in the late forties early fifties by whom and under what circumstance is unknown.” Both notes in NAMA curatorial files.
