DescriptionThe textile, when compared to many similar examples, is remarkably large and in good condition. It is stitched together from two vertical panels of brocade, and lined with four stitched panels of silk gauze. The brocade is woven with a satin base in gold-tone, giving it a glossy luxurious appearance. The floral and geometric patterns were created through the wefts in orange-red and various-shaped purples. Because the textile has been displayed in the owner’s house for several decades, the dyes, especially purple, show losses in various degrees. The left panel is more faded than the other side. The latticework design consists of a floral roundel, in which each of the eight petals takes the form of a cloud-like motif called ruyi (literally means accomplishing your wish), an auspicious symbol commonly seen in Chinese decorative arts. Another major pattern is an octagon formed by two intersected squares, wherein a floral roundel and phoenix motifs appear in dense weaving. These two major patterns are latticed with connected squares and lozenges that frame lotuses, peonies and other small floral patterns.
