Train tracks are ripped from their bed. Boats, homes, and detritus pile up in a twisted heap of rubble. This picture, taken in the coastal town of Minamisanriku, lays bare the damage wrought by the tsunami that devastated the northeast coast of Japan on March 11, 2011. The tsunami killed tens of thousands, destroyed towns, and damaged a nuclear power plant in Fukushima. Photographer Kozo Miyoshi, who has drawn inspiration from this region for years, returned a few weeks after the disaster. Miyoshi’s print portfolio records the aftermath to memorialize the event and raise funds for victims.
