DescriptionImage of a small body of water with surrounding trees reflected in the water.Exhibition HistoryRotation 24. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, June 9 – November 12, 2017, no cat.
A wealthy merchant in Arras, France, Adalbert Cuvelier was also a talented amateur painter and photographer. He was friends with some of the leading painters of the era, including Camille Corot. Although few in number, Cuvelier’s photographs are appreciated today for their refined aesthetics. This one, for example, explores the effect of fog with great delicacy. Adalbert Cuvelier’s work inspired his son, Eugene Cuvelier, a noted landscape photographer of the 1860s.
