Kristine Potter grew up in central Georgia, near a place called Murder Creek. “I always wondered, why do we call it that?” she recalls. “What kind of energy exists down there?”

The idea that the South might have a dark energy stayed with her: “Statistically speaking, the American South is the most violent area of America. There are a lot of ideas about why this might be true. But another question might be, is there an energy of place, and does it affect us in that way? It’s not a question I can answer. It’s just a question I can pose.”
