Descriptionview of drive in movie screen, displaying JFKGallery LabelLee Friedlander began his professional career in photography in the mid-1950s and began to achieve high-level recognition for his personal photographs of the American social landscape of the early 1960s. This photograph takes as its subject a drive-in movie theater. Projected onto the outdoor movie screen is film footage of President John F. Kennedy just prior to his assassination on November 22, 1963. By picturing the film still against the natural backdrop of the sky, Friedlander highlights the pervasive cultural impact that television imagery had in nation’s collective mourning.
