DescriptionView of back of a yield sign, clouds in sky appearing on top.Exhibition History
Rotation 22. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art,
Kansas City, MO, August 10, 2016- January 8, 2017, no cat.
In this image, Lee Friedlander deliberately ignores the traditional rules of artful composition by situating the back of a traffic sign in the center of his picture. Further, he aligns the top of the sign with a tuft of clouds, such that it resembles the form of an ice cream cone. Through this framing and manipulation of focus and depth of field, Friedlander transforms an everyday subject into a witty visual juxtaposition.
