DescriptionImage of a man taking a photograph - his reflection in the car's side mirror. Outside the car is a stone structure with a statue inside of an arched opening, a God Bless America sign, and a cross on the roof.Gallery LabelIn this witty self-portrait, Lee Friedlander deliberately ignores conventional rules for “good” picture making, composing a view that seems to lack an obvious, central subject. Is Friedlander, seen as a reflection in the car’s rearview mirror, the main point of focus? Or are we meant to pay attention to the roadside church visible through his car window? Neither subject commands our full attention, leaving us to draw our own conclusions about the picture’s ultimate meaning.
