Lee Friedlander came to critical attention in the early 1960s for his artfully complex views of the American social landscape. His images range in mood: they are, by turns, witty, surreal, critical, and elegiac. Characteristically, however, they are both visually dense and rich in cultural references. This depiction of Civil War monuments seen through a screen of budding branches stimulates a variety of thoughts on time, the cycles of life and death, and the nature of our national memory and ideals.
