Friendship
Artists habitually collect meaningful works by their friends and colleagues. Given by Peter Voulkos to Ken Ferguson, former head of the ceramics department of the Kansas City Art Institute, this large plate is a testament to Voulkos’ admiration of his fellow artist and ceramic pioneer. Inspired by the spontaneity of Japanese ceramics and American Abstract Expressionist painting, this plate is charged with a sense of immediacy by Voulkos’ gouges, tears and punctures, as well as by the unpredictable forces of the wood kiln.
