DescriptionThin intersecting, wavy lines create enclosed spaces occasionally colored with blue, orange, brown, and black. Circle with small spoked wheel-like form in u.l. quadrantGallery Label
Ault used line not only to evoke form, but also to suggest rhythm and tempo. In the drawing on the left, male and female figures play a high-spirited game of hide-and-seek. They simultaneously emerge from and recede into a lively network of lines that exudes a frenetic energy scarcely contained by the sheet. The drawing at the right lacks the playful figures, but retains the linear framework within which they frolic. The pared down composition is imbued with greater air and space, conveying a more leisurely cadence as the lines twist across the page, accented with areas of bold color.
