DescriptionTwo abstract shapes: at left, a thin vertical twig-like form; at right, a leaf-like three pronged form; both hover over deep shadowsGallery Label
Ault abandoned identifiable references in this pair of abstract drawings. The drawing on the left is a swiftly rendered experiment with positive and negative space, light and dark, and the interaction of kindred shapes. The drawing on the right, in contrast, is more precisely executed. Two curious, specimen-like forms f loat in isolation on the sheet, each surrounded by a dark halo. Despite its air of careful examination, the drawing on the right, like its counterpart, confounds efforts to identify the origin or meaning of its subject.
