DescriptionImage of a woman with a downward gaze (Lady Elizabeth Eastlake) wearing a dress with a lace collar and a shawl. Her head is resting on her hand as she leans on a small stack of books.Gallery LabelThis portrait depicts the writer and critic Lady Elizabeth Eastlake, whose insightful 1857 essay on photography remains relevant to this day. Eastlake was the first woman to write regular art reviews for the London periodical, Quarterly Review. She was an active member of London art circles, and her husband was Sir Charles Eastlake (director of the National Gallery). David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson pose Eastlake contemplatively, her arm resting atop books to emphasize her intellect.
