NOTES:
[1] According to the invoice provided by A. S. Drey to the Nelson-Atkins at the time of purchase, these jars were formerly in the collections of Barons Adolphe and Maurice de Rothschild in Paris. Adolphe ran the Rothschild banking house in Naples, Italy, until 1865 and was also General Consul of the Duchy of Parma. Although Adolphe, Julie and Maurice also kept art objects at Château de Pregny in Geneva, Switzerland, a French export label on the bottom of one of the jars suggests they may have been kept at the Rothschild home on Rue du Monceau, Paris.
[2] According to the Rothschild Archive, Julie married her cousin Adolphe in 1850. The couple had no children. When Julie died in 1907, her nephew Maurice inherited her homes in Paris and Geneva.
