DescriptionImage of a harbor filled with ships, taken from the top of a hill; houses and trees in the foreground, distant view of hillside across the harbor in the background.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
An early photographer of Yosemite and California, Charles Weed responded to the burgeoning market for international photographs by traveling and photographing in Asia. He made his first trip to China in 1860 and established a studio in Hong Kong. For the next few years, Weed traveled between California, Hawaii, and Asia, and produced views of China and Japan. In this image, Weed pictures the Japanese city of Nagasaki, a free port first opened to foreign trade in 1859.
