DescriptionPrinted almost entirely in a vibrant shade of blue, this monotype shows a harbor filled with boats and ships. Two of the larger vessels are featured most prominently in toward the foreground.Gallery LabelKnown primarily for decorative paintings of fashionable life around Boston, Maurice Prendergast was also a prolific printmaker. In this monotype, he extends his interest in leisure subjects by depicting a steamboat and sailboats in Boston Harbor.
A monotype is made by painting an image onto a plate, often made of zinc or copper. The image is transferred onto paper by either hand or machine press. Unlike many printmaking techniques, this process generally yields only one impression.
