DescriptionIn this intimate still life, Raphaelle Peale presents a decanter and single glass filled with tawny-colored liqueur. Behind the glass, a pale lemon rests on an unadorned ledge to the left of a simple, shallow bowl. The modest bowl contains three precariously piled oranges, a handful of almonds, and plump raisins still clinging to the vine. Additionally, four walnuts, yet to be cracked, lie on the ledge at the right of the bowl. The fastidiously rendered offering is positioned close to the picture plane against a stark background and is lit by raking light coming from the left. Just below the walnuts, on the edge of the ledge at the lower right of the composition, Peale inscribed his signature, date, and the location the work was executed.Exhibition History

Still Life with Liqueur and Fruit is an exceptional early example of Raphaelle Peale’s “dining room pictures” and is one of only some 50 examples known today. The artist’s still lifes were considered extraordinary long before the vogue for still life took hold later in the century.

Delicacies from far-off origins, associated with the types of desserts offered in well-to-do households, are presented here in tempting detail. The meticulously rendered textures and skillfully executed reflections underscore Peale’s interest in scientific naturalism. The flawlessly balanced composition speaks to the desire in the early Republic for rational order, although the suggestion of extravagance simmers just below the surface.
