Cameron took up photography at age forty-eight. Largely self-taught, she went on to create one of the most original and influential bodies of work in the medium's history. Her portraits of eminent Victorian men and "fair" women are characterized by their soft focus and close proximity. Though she earned both praise and criticism in her lifetime, Cameron's approach is now recognized as boldly innovative-one that helped secure a "high art" status for the medium. Cameron created over fifty studies of her niece, Julia Jackson, shown here two years after the death of her first husband.
