"If this photograph now appears lifelike to you, you should reconsider what it means to be alive here and now," said photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto of his waxwork portraits. In this dramatically lit photograph, a "lifelike" wax statue of the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian looms from the darkness with unnerving intensity. Sugimoto’s photographic reimagining of this wax replica questions our methods for understanding the humanity of historic figures and history itself.
