A native of New Hampshire, Jay Dearborn Edwards moved to New Orleans in 1857 after briefly residing in St. Louis. During the next four
years, he established a commercial studio and made a significant number of city views, including this image of a thriving industrial wharf stocked with cotton bales ready for shipment to the North and to Europe.
