DescriptionImage of hay bales stacked in a tiered formation in the middle of field.Gallery LabelThis step-shaped form in a Kansas field looks more like a block of LEGO bricks than a stack of haybales. Larry Schwarm, who grew up on a small farm in western Kansas, found endless fascination in his native landscape, a place, in his words, "where the terrain is flat, yet rich in texture and patterns with the natural and man-made elements protruding in monolithic proportions."
This photograph was made as part of a NEA-funded project to survey the state of Kansas.
