Gallery LabelNaval warfare was endemic in the 16th century, especially in the Mediterranean, where the European Christian kingdoms and Turkish Muslim forces were endlessly in conflict. Galleys like the ones shown here were propelled by oars as well as sail, and so were less dependent on wind than sailing ships. The sails are filled with wind and the sky full of blustery clouds, and the artist's refined technique incisively conveys the billowing canvas.
