Prominent Swiss artist Urs Graf earned a reputation not only for designing book illustrations but also for indulging in violent behavior, such as fighting with strangers. He worked as a soldier for hire and was frequently in trouble with the law. Many of his subjects reflect his military experiences and often display a dark sense of humor. This hand-colored woodcut from The Passion of Christ series features three greedy soldiers who throw dice to determine who will get Christ’s robes. Their style of uniform seen here was made popular by Swiss mercenaries.
