Timothy H. O’Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs. The Art Institute of Chicago, October 22, 2011 - January 15, 2012, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, April 7 - September 2, 2012, Brigham Young University Museum of Art, Provo, UT, January 23 - May 26, 2014, no. 61.
To begin the 1869 season, O'Sullivan traveled with survey geologist Samuel Emmons to explore the southern end of the Great Salt Lake and the Wasatch Mountain Range. Salt Lake City photographer Charles Savage accompanied this party. They headed 25 miles south of Salt Lake City to Big Cottonwood Canyon, of particular significance to King because of the recent theory that such canyons had been formed by glacial activity.
