The party settled in a temporary camp just upstream from Shoshone Falls on the Snake River in Idaho. O'Sullivan was quite taken with the 212-foot falls and photographed them from various angles and distances, resulting in some of the most iconic images of the survey. Clarence King viewed the falls as both beautiful and terrifying: a classic example of the sublime.
