Eva Watson-Schütze often worked with women, posing them in romanticized compositions similar to those found in paintings of the time. Watson-Schütze studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts when she was only 16 years old. She took up photography in the 1890s, and participated in the Pictorialist movement. These photographers championed a high-art status for the medium by emulating painting.
