The art movement of Surrealism had an important influence in fashion photography of the 1930s and 1940s. Erwin Blumenfeld, a leading fashion photographer in his day, employed the Surrealists’ interest in the imagery of dreams. As this image demonstrates, he was fascinated by the visual play of positive and negative, and the ideas of reflection and fragmentation.
