DescriptionScenic image of a figure reclining on top of a rocky cliff overlooking a valley.Gallery LabelJames H. Fennemore was a Salt Lake City-based photographer. In the early 1870s, he temporarily joined the Powell Survey, a team that was charting areas surrounding the Colorado River system from northwest Colorado though Utah and northern Arizona. For this venture, Fennemore worked with another photographer, John K. Hillers. The sweeping panorama depicts the Nan-Kun-To-Wip Valley in the Grand Canyon. The figure in the upper left corner was used to convey a sense of scale for viewers unfamiliar with the terrain.
