DescriptionImage of leaf shapes evenly spaced around a fern in the center.Gallery LabelAmerican photography before 1880 was largely a professional pursuit, though the democratic nature of the medium also inspired many amateurs to try their hand. One such figure was Amelia Bergner. She created an album of photograms (which included this page) of elegantly arranged botanical specimens. These images were formed by placing the leaves directly on a sheet of sensitized paper and exposing it to sunlight. When the paper was developed and fixed, these shadow images remained as detailed impressions.
