In his "Expeditionary Series: East Meets West," begun in 1979, Tseng explored the theme of cultural identity on a vast public stage. Assuming the role of an official emissary or ambassador, he dressed in a Chairman Mao worker's suit, complete with ID badge, and recorded himself in front of the world's landmarks. The subject of these oddly powerful images may be read as either friend or spy, man of the world or perpetual alien.
