In this work, Carrie Mae Weems unearths the historical resonance of the Sea Islands on the Georgia coast. Through words and pictures, Weems recounts the fierce resistance of the Ibo Africans whom captors brought to this country in chains in 1803. Her text gives these otherwise calm landscapes a tone of outrage, mourning, and commemoration.
