Napoleon Sarony was born in Canada and studied art in Europe. He began his professional career as a lithographer before opening his first photography studio in New York City in 1865. Sarony's style was highly influential; his contemporaries considered him "a master in the art of posing." Nearly all the notables of the period came to his studio and by 1876, he claimed an archive of over 40,000 negatives of celebrities. This page from Sarony's studio sample book-which includes three portraits of "Buffalo Bill" Cody (the first three images in the second row)-served as a "catalogue" of his popular offerings.
