DescriptionImage of a small wooden boat in a still body of water next to a dock with a fishing pole and net on it.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
This quiet composition, rendered in soft focus with the warm tonalities of a palladium print, characterizes the early work of Margaret Watkins. A label on the back of the print indicates that Watkins made the exposure just after sunset to ensure the desired quality of light and that she included the photograph in a Seattle exhibition around 1924.
Watkins was a Canadian-born artist who earned a living as an advertising photographer in New York. A student of Clarence H. White, who founded a school dedicated to instruction in photography and design, Watkins participated in several early photography exhibitions in the United States and Great Britain.
