The work of Philadelphian Edward Quigley from the early 1930s exemplifies the influence of the European New Vision in American photography. Working as both a commercial and artistic photographer, Quigley kept abreast of the most advanced international work and incorporated a range of modernist ideas into his own practice. In 1931, he produced a group of light abstractions-including this image-using prisms, selective focus, camera motion and occasional double-printing of negatives.
