Marjorie Content, who grew up in privileged circumstances, regarded her picture-making as a personal rather than professional pursuit. However, her modernist work was published in avant-garde photography magazines and admired by her close friends, Alfred Stieglitz and Georgia O’Keeffe. She was clearly influenced by both, and traveled with O’Keeffe to Bermuda in 1933 and the American Southwest in 1934. Content’s photographs are modest in size but large in spirit; she used the camera in search of poetic, rather than documentary, truths.
