DescriptionImage of a man (Paul Cadmus) staring at lightbulbs hanging from bare cords. He wears a collared shirt with chest pockets.Exhibition HistoryRotation 9. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 20 – March 13, 2011, no cat.

In this portrait of painter Paul Cadmus, George Platt Lynes used five dangling lightbulbs to add a curious psychological charge to an otherwise ordinary portrait. Lynes made portraits of friends and artists, including Cadmus, who worked collaboratively as part of a small circle of gay, lesbian, and bisexual artists in New York City. Often staging his subjects in fabricated scenarios, Lynes contrasted the familiar and the strange to explore the mysteries of dreams and desire.
