DescriptionImage of a giant sculpture of a woman's leg on top of a building which is lit up at night.Gallery Label

To attract the attention of would-be customers driving through Los Angeles, this advertiser created a sign in the shape of an enormous, sculpted woman’s leg to sell their product: Sanderson Stockings.

Max Yavno began as a social documentary photographer. He worked for the Works Progress Administration between 1936 and 1942 and served as a member of the Photo League in New York, a group of liberal-minded, socially conscious photographers. After serving in World War II, Yavno moved to California and specialized in street scenes in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
