DescriptionSoftly focused image of silhouetted pedestrians and a column in the lower right corner.Gallery Label
The silhouetted forms and elongated shadows of urban pedestrians animate this street scene by Johan Hagemeyer. Many photographers embraced modern subjects in the 1930s and 1940s. Hagemeyer’s soft-focus technique, harkens back to a previous decade, however, when artistically minded photographers associated with the Pictorialist movement embraced this aesthetic to distinguish their photographs from amateur snapshots and documentary images.
