DescriptionImage of a woman (model is Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn) wearing a wide brimmed hat, long white gloves, and a dark short-sleeved dress with a tall collar and a white scarf loosely gathered around her neck. She stands with her hands on her hips as she holds an umbrella diagonally across her torso.Gallery LabelA longtime contributor to Vogue magazine, Irving Penn is a photographic icon in his own right. Many of his best-known fashion photographs are remarkably abstract, evoking the aura of high style rather than precisely describing specific items of clothing. The sophisticated artistic vision of this photograph - at once dynamic and restrained, descriptive and mysterious - gives it visual interest that far transcends its original advertising function. This is one of Penn's favorite models, his wife Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn.
