The straightforward, simple elegance of Irving Penn’s photographs for Vogue magazine revolutionized fashion photography in the 1950s. By emphasizing the tonal and textural contrasts of flesh, clothing and architecture, Penn avoided the theatricality of earlier fashion photography to create a more modern—though still exoticized—vision. Lisa Fonssagrives, the model pictured here, married Penn in 1950 and remained his wife until her death in 1992.
