In this photograph, Rhondal McKinney records the geometric patterns of plowing and seeding. A longtime resident of central Illinois, McKinney is at home in the American Midwest. Beginning in the 1970s, he has used an 8x10-inch view camera to make minutely detailed studies of this relentlessly horizontal space. As a curator, McKinney assembled the 1983 exhibition “An Open Land: Photographs of the Midwest, 1852-1982” for the Art Institute of Chicago.
