DescriptionPanoramic image of a rural landscape with a house and barn near the center flanked by mature trees and narrow strips of tilled land that extend off the edges of the frame.Gallery LabelI became aware of the unbelievable infinite detail on the horizon; this is what drew my attention.
—Art Sinsabaugh
Composed with taut simplicity, this delicate landscape focuses on a small strip of farmland in central Illinois. Cropped from a much larger negative (12 x 20 inches), the artist’s view consciously excludes vast expanses of the sky and foreground to concentrate attention on the house, barn, and trees along the horizon.
Art Sinsabaugh used a large-format banquet camera, originally designed to photograph indoor social events, to make this image. It became a signature tool for the photographer, who used it to transform the flat, expansive Midwestern landscape into a wholly unique vision.
