Gallery LabelFascinated by fame, Pop artist Andy Warhol referenced popular culture in his works. In 1972, he began a series appropriating the official portraits of Chinese ruler Mao Zedong, which were common in China at the time. Warhol created these images as American president Richard Nixon paid an official state visit to China to reopen diplomatic relations between the countries. Using his signature garish colors, Warhol critiqued the totalitarian propaganda glorifying the leader.
