DescriptionImage of people walking on the street with shadows cast behind them and neon signs in the background.Gallery LabelColor photography at this time was expensive, technically complex to produce, and often associated with commercial work, rather than fine art photography. In the late 1940s, Arthur Siegel made the rare choice to photograph almost exclusively in color.
Siegel studied photography at the New Bauhaus in Chicago (later called the Institute of Design) under renowned avant-garde photographer László Moholy-Nagy. Originally located in Germany, the Bauhaus school was closed by the Nazis in 1933 and many instructors, including Moholy-Nagy, fled the country.
