Bourke-White became one of the most famous photographers of her day through her work for Henry Luce's publications Fortune and Life. The drama of industrial technology forms the central motif of Bourke-White's early work. Through the careful application of a variety of modernist traits-dynamic viewpoints, bold close-ups, and the repetition of simple shapes-she gave compelling aesthetic form to such mundane subjects as a row of plow blades.
